Medigap, or Medicare Supplement Insurance, is an essential tool for many Medicare beneficiaries, helping to cover costs that Original Medicare does not. This article provides an in-depth explanation of each Medigap plan, allowing you to understand the coverage options and choose the best plan for your needs.

Understanding Medigap Plans

Medigap plans are standardized, meaning each plan offers the same basic benefits regardless of the insurance company selling it. The primary differences are the level of coverage and the cost. The plans are named with letters A through N, each providing a different combination of benefits.

Medigap Plan A

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used up
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • The first 3 pints of blood used in a medical procedure
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
