  • Disability and The Ticket to Work Program

he Ticket to Work Program is a voluntary initiative from the Social Security Administration (SSA) aimed at helping individuals with disabilities achieve financial independence through employment. It is available to beneficiaries aged 18 to 64 who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and wish to re-enter or join the workforce.

How Does the Program Work?

The Ticket to Work program provides participants access to:

  • Employment Networks (ENs): These are private or public organizations offering job placement, career counseling, and ongoing support.
  • State Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Agencies: These agencies assist participants with more intensive services, such as job training or vocational rehabilitation.

Participants can choose a service provider to develop a tailored employment plan. This plan outlines career goals and the steps needed to achieve them, including training, job placement, and support for maintaining employment.

Benefits of the Program

The program offers numerous advantages:

  • Protection During Medical Reviews: While actively participating and making progress, participants are generally exempt from medical Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs).
  • Work Incentives: Beneficiaries can explore employment opportunities without immediately losing their benefits. They also retain healthcare coverage and have the option to return to benefits if work is no longer sustainable.
  • Financial Independence: Over time, the program encourages reduced reliance on disability benefits, aiming for self-sufficiency.

To qualify:

  • You must be between 18 and 64 years old.
